Sovereign of the Seas Model (Click photos to enlarge)
Designed by Phineas Pett for Britain, Sovereign of the Seas was launched in 1637. The mighty ship was part of the Battle of Kentish Knock against the Dutch. She was grounded at the end of the battle and spent the rest of the first Dutch War at port. Later on she participated in the Battle of Solebay, also against the Dutch Navy. In 1696 she burned while docked at Chatham, the victim of a candle left burning in one of the cabins.
